10 Alternatives to Christmas Gifting

It’s that time of year again, when folks are dashing to the mall in search of that perfect something to give that special someone. Or maybe you’re looking for a gift for a co-worker, group member of relative. Well, instead of purchasing a token gift that is probably made in China, why not consider making a donation in their name? Here is a list that the pups have helped me compile, including some of my favorite charities.

Best friends Animal Society is my long-time favorite! That is why our family, including the 3 Pups, volunteered there this summer.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest animal protection and advocate organization, acting through reform, public awareness, emergency response, sanctuaries and more. A great organization.

World Vision is “a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.” Examples of the many ways to donate are by sponsoring a child, donating ducks, chickens, goats, clean water funds, help sexually exploited women and girls or feed hungry families. Prices begin around $10.00 and up.

The ASPCA does what it’s name suggests-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The American Humane Association helps to prevent cruelty to animals and humans.

Earthjustice is a “nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws”

The National Park Foundation raises funds to connect all Americans to their national parks through volunteerism, visitor experience, education and outreach programs. I have a whole new appreciation for the National parks after our 3 month camping experience.

The World Wildlife Fund The organization works to conserve the world’s most important ecosystems for the benefit of both the species and people who live there.

Heifer International helps people become more self-reliant by helping people obtain a sustainable source of food and income. Like World Vision, you can donate a little or a lot for gifts such as honeybees, water buffalos, trees or seeds.

Friends of Animals are helping free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world. They work for primates, marine animals and more.

Of course, you could contribute to any of your local shelters or animal rescue groups, as well.

If you can’t afford a monetary donation this year, consider having a pet food drive at work, school of at home. Rescue groups, shelters and food pantries are in desperate need this year, and always.

Thank you for considering a different kind of kindness this year.

  1. Wonderful post, Jules! Great minds think alike 🙂 — we have given to ALL of the great organizations in previous (and most, in this) year that you listed w/ the exception of one, that I hadn’t heard of. When we gave a dear friend of ours, who has such an interest and sensitivity to needs abroad, a donation card in her name to Heifer International, she was beyond touched and said it was her favorite gift of all the years we’ve been exchanging. Craig and I have asked the same of others/family for the past few years. There is no greater gift to us, than one that brings happiness into another’s life. When you positively contribute to, in whatever form — volunteer, financial contribution, fostering, or just helping someone across the street — a life that needs caring for (be it animal/person), you can rest assure that our world is better b/c of YOU! I personally believe that Heaven has a special place for “Earth” Angels! 🙂 … not that this should be your “incentive”…just sayin’! hee hee 🙂

It doesn’t take but one small gesture to make another’s day. How much it means to a senior citizen just to be “heard”… what a difference it makes for a shelter dog to have a volunteer walk, play w/ and pay attention to him…every praise he hears, he will remember and cherish! Times are tough, and not everyone has funds to distribute. Take then, just a moment, to smile at another on the street, help someone load their groceries into their car, offer to an elderly neighbor, your dog-walking services for the “cold” months, tell the clerk at your grocery store how much you appreciate their good service, volunteer for a day at the nearest animal shelter, or,… just call someone in your life — past/present — and let them know they are in your thoughts and best wishes. Doesn’t take much and you’d be amazed at how your ONE, heart-felt gesture, gets paid forward and sometimes, changes things/people/the world for the better…maybe even forever. 🙂
    XOXO, Amy
