Spoil Yourself at Highbourne Cay, Exumas

Highbourne Cay

Highbourne Cay

“Sputt…Sputt….”

Nothing. Silence. No engine running. Just the sound of waves and current.

“Shit! Jesus, take the wheel” (A joke we use, referring to a Carrie Underwood song, when someone else needs to steer the boat)

We are heading into the cut to take us to Highbourne Cay, a beautiful marina/resort that is visible just around he corner. I grab the wheel and point us back to the open sea. Fortunately, the current is helping to pull us in that direction, so I don’t have to put up much of a fight.

Jeff and I were fully aware that we needed to re-fuel, and soon, but according to the fuel gauge, we still had several gallons to get us into Highbourne Cay, the Gateway to the Exumas. This is as low as we had allowed the fuel level to get, and we soon learned that it was a tick or two off.

Fortunately, there is an extra five-gallons of diesel in the container strapped on deck, allowing us to pull into the dock just in the nick of time.

As Jeff refills our tank, I take the pups for a pee. Holy Crap! This place is paradise! After deciding to spoil ourselves, we pulled into a slip, hooked up to electricity, (Air conditioning! Yes!) paid our $90/night fee and hopped on the complimentary bikes for a tour of this private resort.

Highbourne Cay offers paying guests several beaches from which to choose, most of which are remote, yet they surprised us with amenities such as free-standing decks with beach chairs, hammocks, umbrellas, kayaks and other luxuries where we least expected them.

The restaurant, Xumas, requires a reservation for a gourmet, delicious dinner, but it is also possible to grab a bite at the bar while watching a game on the flat-screen TV.

There is also an open air gym perched on one of the highest hills on the island, where the cooling breezes and unforgettable views make this the gym to beat.

Someone on the island also has a sense of humor, as we discovered on one of our walkabouts. We chanced upon a sign to a spring, and made our way down a steep hill, into a thicket of brush, ready to refill our water bottles.

But this is what we found.

And along the desolate, dusty road…

We thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay at Highbourne Cay before heading further south to the remote, pristine, and utterly enchanting Exumas.
